October 15 - Two-thirds of tickets for the sports at the the London 2012 Olympics will be priced at less than £50 the most expensive being £725 for high-demand events like the 100 metres expected to feature Usain Bolt, it was announced today.


Ticket prices for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies range from £20.12 to £2,102 for the Opening and £1,500 for the Closing.

An extra 800,000 tickets are also being made available, taking the total to 8.8 million when they go on sale to the public next March. it was announced at a ceremony in Newham.

Up to 75 per cent of tickets will be made available to the public through the application process.

The ticket price strategy also includes a levy on the prce of prestige hospitality packages that will allow 100,000 tickets to be donated to schools in London and around the UK via the London 2012 "Get Set" eduction network and the Olympic and Paralympic-style school sports competition.

Organisrs have also launched a "pay your age" scheme that will operate for more than 200 sessions that will see anyone the age of 16 and under at the start of the Games pay their age - and everyone aged over 60 and over £16.

"We have three clear principles for our ticketing strategy - tickets need to be affordable and accessible to as many people as possible," said Sebastian Coe, the chairman of London 2012.

"Tickets are an important revenue stream for us to fund the Games and our ticketing plans have the clear aim of of filling the venues to the rafters.

"When we won the right to stage the Games, we made a promise to inspire young people to choose sport and our ticket prices will get as many young people to choose sport and our ticket prices will get as many young people as possible to the Games."

There will be 649 separate ticketed sessions across the 26 sports.

All the tickets for events in and around London include a travelcard and London 2012 has absorbed the impact of the recent VAT increase.

The London 2012 "Sign Up" programme was launched earlier this year.

So far more than 1.7 million have signed up.
